SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Region will embrace the body of top Kurdish Commander Akam Omar during the Kurdistan Flag Day on Saturday, said Sulaimani governor Haval Abubaker.
The Commander of the Kurdistan elite forces, Commando Forces, Akam Omar, died on Monday in Germany.
The Commander has died from wounds sustained in an IED blast amid an anti-ISIS operation in late October in Sulaimani’s Garmian Zenana area.
Kurdistan Commando Forces on Thursday said the body of the top Commander is set to be repatriated to Kurdistan Region on Saturday, the day that also corresponds to The Kurdistan Flag Day.
The Kurdistan Flag Day was designated by the Kurdistan Parliament in 2009. It chose December 17 because of its association with the Mahabad Republic, a self-governing Kurdish state that existed in the 1940s.
“We will receive the body of martyr Commander Akam on the Kurdistan Flag Day on the sacred land of Kurdistan in Sulaimani city,” said Haval Abubaker.
The governor also extended words of gratitude for designating December 17 as a symbol to honor the struggles and endeavors that Commander Akam had made for the sake of protecting the Kurdistan entity, flag, and people.
The Commander’s body will arrive in Kurdistan Region via Sulaimani international airport, according to a statement from the forces.
