SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iran’s judiciary sentenced four people to death on Wednesday over alleged links with the Israeli intelligence service.

Four people were sentenced to death who allegedly “cooperated” with the Israeli intelligence service and committed kidnappings, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported.

The Islamic Republic has long accused arch-enemy Israel of carrying out covert operations on its soil. Tehran has lately accused Israeli and Western intelligence services of plotting a civil war in the country, now gripped by some of the biggest anti-government protests since its 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Mehr said the “accused” had been arrested by the Revolutionary Guards and the Ministry of Intelligence.

Iran has long held the dubious distinction of being the “Number Two executioner” in the world after China, according to Amnesty International.

Iran carried out at least 246 executions in 2020, securing the “shameful place of second top executioner worldwide”, Amnesty said.
