SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kuwait detected cholera in a citizen arriving from a neighboring country where there is an outbreak, the health ministry said in a statement on Friday.
According to the World Health Organization, Lebanon is the latest phase of an outbreak that began in Afghanistan in June before spreading to Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, and Syria.
Syria was confirmed first cholera case in August, according to the World Health Organization. The outbreak has since rampaged across the country and last month spread into Lebanon.
Cholera is typically spread through contaminated water, food, or sewage. It can cause severe diarrhea and dehydration.
Left untreated, cholera can be fatal within hours, even in previously healthy people. The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe and life-threatening.
