Kurdistan Region President attends funeral of victims of Duhok explosion

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — President of the Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani visited Duhok on Wednesday and participated in the funeral ceremony of the five victims that lost their lives following a gas explosion in Duhok on Monday night, the Presidency office said.

At least five people died and above 30 were injured late Monday night after an LPG gas cylinder exploded on a building where students used to stay instead of dorms in the city of Duhok.

The blast marked a tragic incident for the Kurdistan Region people with the governor of the city announcing three days of “national mourning”.

President Barzani who was in the Iraqi capital for an official visit on Tuesday, he canceled the second day of his visit to Baghdad to attend the funeral in Dohuk, according to his office.

“President Barzani extended his condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Duhok province, and offered his deep sympathy,” the office said in a statement.

“For their part, the families of the victims expressed their gratitude for the condolences and participation of the President in their funeral ceremony.”

He also instructed the Governor of Duhok to follow up on the condition of the injured and the victims of the accident and expressed readiness to offer all necessary assistance to them and their families, it added in the statement.
