SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Prime Minister of Iraq Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on Wednesday decided to form a high governmental body to combat corruption, according to the state news agency (INA).
PM Sudani has directed the related authorities to form the so-called “Supreme Anti-Corruption Commission,” aiming to accelerate the combating of major corruption files, INA cited a statement from the Premier’s office as saying.
Moreover, it will recover those wanted in corruption cases in addition to the public funds that have been abused.
In the meantime, PM Sudani has formed a support team, possessing a wide range of authorizations, in order to provide full support to the Supreme Anti-Corruption Commission in opening these files.
“The team is headed by the Director General of the Ministry of Interior, Abdul Karim Abdul Fadel,” the statement added.
Sudani’s cabinet took office in late October, ending more than a year of deadlock since a parliamentary election. He was backed for the post of prime minister by an alliance of Iran-aligned factions.
In the course of being elected Sudani has vowed to reform the economy, fight corruption, and improve deteriorating public services, combat poverty, and unemployment among other things.
Iraq ranks lowly 157 out of 180 countries in Transparency International’s corruption perceptions index.
He also promised to amend the election law within three months and hold early parliamentary elections within a year.
