SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) leadership council on Tuesday held an ordinary meeting during which it called for the end of “autocracy” in the Kurdistan Region.

PUK leadership council met in its headquarters of Sulamani, it was overseen by the party’s President, Bafel Talabani, a readout after the meeting concluded said.

Discussions drew attention to the PUK’s “constant” policies throughout the Iraqi political process, particularly after the formation of the new government there. While also touching upon the democratic national entitlements of the Kurdish people.

Moreover, Talabani thanked PUK’s leadership for being united, resulting in the success of the party back in Baghdad and implanting the desires of the Kurdish people.

Talabani’s words of gratitude were for the PUK’s “visible” impact on the new Iraqi government’s agenda as well which is currently ongoing under Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani’s lead.

Talabani firmly insisted that the frontline to defend the Kurdish people’s rights is Baghdad, it’s the main spot for maintaining Iraq’s democratic process.

“PUK’s policy is reasonable since it deemed Baghdad as the first frontline for protecting a democratic consensual federal Iraq,” he said. This is the PUK’s will. We are confident that we will succeed,” he added.

Another part of the meeting was dedicated to talks on the Kurdistan Region political situation, where the party’s officials laid emphasis on correcting the ongoing governance situation, according to the readout.

“PUK wants the termination of autocracy and governance monopoly,” and “the Kurdistan Region government must be for all people, cities, and areas rather than discriminating or making differences,” it said.

“PUK decided to put an end to such a direction of governance that harms our people,” it continued.
