SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq met on Monday in the capital.

The Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported, Muhammed al-Halbousi, the Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq and Head of UNAMI., Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, met.

The meeting took place in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, as the deadlock over the government formation between the leading political parties continue to extend further.

The meeting discussed the developments in the political situation in the country, according to the INA.

Iraq has entered a political stalemate due to parties’ failure to reach an agreement to select a president and a prime minister in the parliament since an early election that was held in October last year.

More than 11 months after legislative elections, Iraqi institutions are at a standstill over lawmakers’ inability to elect a president and a Prime Minister.
