Iraqi Foreign Minister receives U.S. Assistant Secretary of State

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein on Tuesday received U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Barbara A. Leaf in Baghdad, the state news agency reported.

Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs Leaf who is in the Iraqi capital for a visit, met with the Foreign Minister, the U.S. official is also expected to visit the Kurdistan Region shortly.

The meeting disused the bilateral ties between the U.S. and Iraq, emphasizing enhancing Iraq’s security and political stability, INA cited a statement from the ministry as saying.

The senior officials also exchanged views regarding the recent bloody unrest in Baghdad, and the Minister told leaf that “all the political forces should take a lesson from what happened, in order to preserve civil peace.”

Talking about the regional situation, “they confirmed that achieving stability in Syria is not only in the interest of the Syrian people but also in the interest of Iraq and the region as a whole.”

Leaf and Hussein mentioned the relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America, and the course of the ongoing negotiations in Vienna on the Iranian nuclear project, according to INA.
