SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Leading figure of the Shiite coordination framework Hadi al-Amiri met Speaker of the Iraqi parliament Mohamed al-Halbousi on Saturday in Baghdad, Iraqi media reported.
Leading figure of the coordination framework (CF) as well as the head of the Iraqi al-Fateh alliance Amiri met Halbousi, according to Iraqi media, the formation of the new government and the ongoing protests in Baghdad have been discussed.
According to Iraqi reports since yesterday evening, Amiri launched an initiative aimed at inviting all political parties to sit at the dialogue table to overcome the current political crisis.
For that reason, he met the Sunni leaders in Baghdad.
Talks on new government formation are still continuing, the inter-Shiite power struggle between the Sadrist movement and the CF has left Iraq in the longest political deadlock.
Iraqi political situation worsened when the Sadrist supporters stormed the parliament building and staged a sit-in, preventing parliament to convene and elect the new government.
The deadlock, now in its tenth month since the MPs failed to convene inside the parliament to vote for a new government following October 2021 election, That’s the longest in the country since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion reset the political order.
More than 300 days have passed since the last election, the country has been without a president and prime minister because of the political deadlock, and Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi continues as the caretaker government.
