SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Iraqi Judicial Council on Wednesday rejected a call from Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr urging the Council to intervene and dissolve the current elected parliament.

Earlier on Wednesday Sadr in a statement urged the Judicial Council to dissolve the Iraqi parliament before the end of the next week.

Immediately, following Sadr’s demand, the Judicial Council in a statement made clear that there are only two ways to dissolve the Iraqi Council of Representatives.

Either, by the two of third votes of the Council’s members or under the request of the Prime Minister and the consent of the President.

“There is no third way, no parties can resolve the political deadlock including Judicial if it contradicts the constitutions” the Iraqi Judicial Council replied to Sadr’s demand.

“The procedures to dissolve the Iraqi parliament are limited to article 64 in the constitution,” it said.
