Iraqi forces killed several gunmen in Jalawla Town: reporter

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Iraqi security forces have bombarded Jalawla town late on Tuesday in Diyala governorate, and several gunmen were killed, said Esta’s reporter.

“Status of killed still unknown whether they were (Islamic State) ISIS militants or local fishermen,” said the reporter.

Due to high alert on ISIS terrorist’s ambush, the security forces did not further progress to the targeted area, a source inside the forces told Esta’s correspondent.

Jalawla is a town in Diyala Governorate, Iraq. It is located on the Diyala River, 8 km north of Sadiyah. The town is populated by Arabs, Kurds, and Turkmens. Before the Ba’athist Arabization campaigns in North Iraq in the 1960s, the town had a Kurdish majority. Jalawla was announced as a sub-district in 1958.

This territory is witnessing a security failure since the withdrawal of Peshmerga forces in 2017. It has been identified as the disputed area between the Kurdistan Region government and Iraq’s government. As the result, outlaw militants and remained ISIS fighters have utilized the area’s insecurity in order to conduct their operations.
