SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Region’s health minister said on Wednesday there are only two confirmed cases of Congo fever in the Region.
In a statement, minister Saman Barzinji said its teams continue to find and locate suspected cases of the disease.
“Only two confirmed cases had been recorded in the Kurdistan Region,” Barzinji said. “They were sent home after receiving treatment at hospitals.”
Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever causes severe haemorrhaging, with people usually catching it through contact with the blood of infected animals, according to the World Health Organization.
The disease has a fatality rate of between 10 and 40 percent of all cases.
The disease has been endemic to Iraq since 1979, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
On Tuesday, the Iraqi ministry said it had recorded a total of 120 infections and 20 deaths.
