SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Dozens of taxi drivers protested in Sulaimani city on Monday against high gasoline prices in the Kurdistan Region.

The drivers gathered outside the building of Sulaimani’s governorate, blocking the main road between Sulaimani and Kirkuk for several hours.

They called on authorities in the province to help reduce petrol prices for the taxi drivers and to dedicate six stations for them.

One liter of “regular” gasoline in the patrol stations is sold at 1,000 dinars (69 cents), up 725 dinars in a week. One liter of “supreme” gasoline price is at 1,200 dinars.

Normal grade gasoline was sold at 500 Iraqi dinars (34 cents) at the start of 2021 but the prices rose to around 750 dinars per liter (51 cents) late in summer.
