Six farmers killed in ISIS attack in Kirkuk – reporter

A vehicle is burning after Islamic State militants attack Sami Asi village in Kirkuk, May 23, 2022.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Six farmers were killed in an attack by Islamic State (ISIS) militants in Kirkuk province on Monday, Esta Media Network reporter said.

Esta’s reporter in Kirkuk said a group of ISIS militants attacked the village of Sami Asi in Rashad sub-district, southwest of Kirkuk.

They killed six farmers and burned vehicles as well as agricultural lands, he added.

Following the attack, Iraq’s federal police and Hashid al-Shaabi carried out a searching operation to find the militants.

ISIS overran large swathes of Iraq and neighboring Syria in 2014, declaring a “caliphate”, before Baghdad declared victory in late 2017 after a grinding campaign.

But a low-level militant insurgency has persisted, particularly in rural areas north of Baghdad around the city of Kirkuk and in the eastern provinces of Diyala and Saladin.
