SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Peshmerga forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition forces launched an operation against Islamic State (ISIS) remnants in Qarachogh mountain in southwest of Erbil on Sunday, the ministry of Peshmerga said.

The Peshmerga forces backed by the Coalition forces destroyed “all ISIS positions” during the operation, the Kurdistan Region’s ministry of Peshmerga said in a statement.

The operation came three days after Kurdistan’s counter-terrorism forces, Peshmerga, police and the Iraqi military launched a large-scale operation against the militants in areas between Kifri and Tuz Khurmatu.

On Tuesday, the counter-terrorism forces carried out an operation against the militants in areas in Zinana sub-district.

Islamic State controlled roughly a third of Iraq between 2014 and 2017. Iraqi forces and Kurdish troops backed by U.S.-led Coalition forces as well as Iran-backed Shia militias defeated the militant group in 2017, but its members still roam areas of northern Iraq and northeastern Syria.
