Kurdish counter-terrorism forces launch anti-ISIS operation in Kifri district – reporter

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Region’s Counter-Terrorism Forces launched an operation against Islamic State (ISIS) remnants in Kifri district on Tuesday, Esta Media Network reporter said.

Esta’s reporter in Garmian said the counter-terrorism group (CTG) carried out the operation to clear areas in Zinan sub-disrupt of ISIS remnants.

“Clashes still continue,” he added.

The operation came after ISIS militants carried out several attacks against villagers in the area in the past weeks.

Islamic State controlled roughly a third of Iraq between 2014 and 2017. Iraqi forces and Kurdish troops backed by U.S.-led Coalition forces as well as Iran-backed Shia militias defeated the militant group in 2017, but its members still roam areas of northern Iraq and northeastern Syria.
