SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Authorities in Garmian administration on Wednesday announced drought in the area due to low rainfalls.
Supervisor of Garmian administration Jalal Nuri said there would be drought in the administration this year in accordance with the international standards.
Nuri warned of the consequences of the drought on environment and agriculture, saying “the impacts of this year’s drought will be worse in compare with last year because it is the second year which is drought in Garmian”.
The official noted that more than 135,000 dunams of lands (13,500 hectares) would be damages and the drought would also affect fish products in the area.
The administration has formed a number of committees to investigate the issue and prepare reports for the government so as to provide budgets to face the drought, he said.
Authorities have long warned that the Kurdistan Region will be facing drought and shortages of water due to low rainfalls and the construction of dams in Turkey and Iran, which has reduced water flows to the Region.
Earlier this week, director of Dukan dam Kochar Jamal said there would be drought in the Kurdistan Region this year, warning that groundwater levels will largely decrease.
“There was only 300 millimeters of rain this year, while we needed 600 millimeters. Therefore, we have drought this year by all measures,” Jamal told Esta Media Network.
