Iraq wants to maintain relations with Russia, Ukraine: security adviser

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraq wants to maintain its relations with both Russia and Ukraine, said the country’s security advisor on Thursday, as the West tightens pressure on Russia to halt its invasion of Ukraine.

Iraq’s National Security Adviser Qasem al-Araji discussed with the Chargé d’Affairs of the Ukrainian Embassy in Baghdad the latest developments in the Ukrainian-Russian crisis and its impact on the region, according to the official Iraqi news agency.

“Iraq has gone through many absurd wars and suffered from an economic siege for a long time,” he was quoted as saying.

“We feel what others are suffering because of crises and wars,” he added.

Araji stressed the importance of efforts to succeed talks between Russia and Ukraine, saying Iraq “adopts the principle of dialogue and a diplomatic solution as a basis for resolving crises between countries”.

“Iraq’s position is consistent in calling for dialogue and sitting at the negotiating table,” he noted.

“Iraq has good relations with Russia and Ukraine, and does not want to abandon these relations with the two parties.”

The Ukrainian diplomat, for his part, stressed the continuation of cooperation between the two countries, INA reported.
