SULAIMANI (ESTA) – The International Standard Organization (ISO) has officially recognized the Kurdistan Region in first step to include its flag as emoji.

“This recognition will also help our governments digitization process, including support for e-trade, Int’l postal & banking services,” said Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Qubad Talabani.

The recognition, promoted by the KRG Deputy Minister, will have the Kurdistan Region decoded as IQ-KR in ISO’s system, the KRG said in a statement on Friday.

According to the KRG, the ISO provided three codes for the Region’s three provinces of Erbil, Sulaimani and Duhok. A code will also be given to Halabja.

“A few years ago I promised a Kurdistan Flag emoji. Today we took a big step towards that goal. ISO has officially recognized the Kurdistan Region,” Talabani said on his official Twitter account.

KRG said the ISO recognition “will also pave the way for the connection of Kurdistan Region’s institutions to the international institutions.”

ISO has 167 national standards bodies which supports innovation and provides solutions to global challenges by sharing knowledge and develop voluntary, consensus-based, market relevant International Standards.
