SULAIMANI (ESTA) – Employees of the private garbage companies on Tuesday went on strike for the second day in a row in Sulaimani after going months without receiving payment.

The strike, which is second of its kind in the last three months, has led to the accumulation of piles of uncollected garbage on the streets of the Sulaimani province.

Three private companies have been hired by the government to collect Sulaimani’s trash. The companies claim that they have not received their payment in the last five months.

“[The companies’ employees] are not ready to continue their work without payment, this will lead to the suspension of our projects,” the companies said in a statement.

Sulaimani municipality directed its employees to pick up the garbage, struggling to clean the city’s five zones due to the lack of its workers.

First strike by the private garbage companies in Sulaimani occurred in September 2021, which was put to an end after an attempt by Bafel Jalal Talabani.

The accumulation of a huge quantity of hazardous waste in the center of Sulaimani city has become a serious concern.
