SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi security forces detained 15 militants in Nineveh province, a security service said on Sunday.
Iraq’s National Security Service said in a statement that its forces managed to dismantle a “terrorist sleeper cell” consisting of 15 militants in several areas in Nineveh.
“They admitted that they had planned to launch intermittent attacks to destabilize security in the governorate,” the security service added.
Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
