“We have decided to suspend the collection of stray dogs for now,” Omer said in a statement.

Omer added that she had instructed a team to investigate the incident and collect samples for examination at the specific labs to find out the reason behind the death of the dogs.

Esta Media Network reporter cited officials as saying that a disease might have caused the death of 80 dogs in the shelter.

In January, the shelter designed to take in thousands of stray dogs from the streets of Sulaimani was opened in the city. There are around 400 dogs settled into their new home.

Male and female dogs are separated from each other to prevent them from reproducing, according to officials at the shelter.
