SULAIMANI (ESTA) — At least 12 Kurds were executed in Iran’s prisons last month, said a rights watchdog on Saturday.
Hengaw Organization for Human Rights said in its monthly report that the Kurdish prisoners accused of “deliberate murder” were executed in prisons in Urmia, Ilam and Luristan.
Another Kurdish prisoner died in Ahvaz central prison, said Hangaw, which monitors human rights abuses in Iranian Kurdistan.
Iran has long held the dubious distinction of being the “Number Two executioner” in the world after China, according to Amnesty International.
In 2021, Iran executed 48 Kurdish prisoners, according to Hengaw.
At least 27 Kurds including two women were detained last month, the organization said. They were accused of “political and civil activities”, it added.
Ten other Kurdish activists were sentenced to 26 years in jail, it stated.
More than 600 Kurdish people were also detained by the Iranian security services last year, Hengaw said in its annual report earlier this month.
