SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi forces detained eight Islamic State (ISIS) members in Kirkuk province, Iraq’s security media cell said on Friday.
In a statement, the security media cell said units from the National Security Agency detained seven “terrorists belonging to ISIS criminal gangs in separate areas” in Kirkuk, state news agency INA reported.
The detainees “confessed to their previous work in the so-called states of Kirkuk and Anbar”, it added.
Separately, the agency of intelligence and federal investigation said its units arrested a person responsive for “financial and logistical support” ISIS in Kirkuk province.
Iraqi forces have detained dozens of ISIS members in Kirkuk province in the past months.
On December 4, the country’s security media cell announced the detention of two senior ISIS members in Kirkuk.
The suspects who were in charge of “managing funds related to the terrorist operations” of the militant group were among the most wanted people in accordance with the article 4 of the counter-terrorism law, it added.
ISIS controlled roughly a third of Iraq between 2014 and 2017. Iraqi forces and Kurdish troops backed by U.S.-led Coalition forces as well as Iran-backed Shia militias defeated the militant group in 2017, but its members still roam areas of northern Iraq and northeastern Syria.
