Iraqi man kills 20 family members during raid in Babil: authorities

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A wanted man killed 20 members of his extended family after the security forces launched a raid to arrest him, authorities said on Thursday.

Babil operations command said the security forces carried out a raid to arrest wanted people in Jableh area in the province on Thursday.

AFP cited a security source as saying that the incident took place in Al-Rashayed village in the province.

The suspect opened fire indiscriminately after the security forces surrounded him, Babil operations command said in a statement.

“Upon entering the house which the owner refused to surrender, the unit found that all members of his family, numbering 20, had died,” it added.

The suspect committed suicide after killing the members of his family, Iraqi media reported.

Two members of the security forces were also wounded, Babil operations command said in a statement

AFP cited an intelligence source as saying that the suspect was part of Islamic State (ISIS).

The security forces began an investigation into the deaths of the civilians, state news agency INA reported.
