SULAIMANI (ESTA) — U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) has foiled a “big” plan to attack Hasakah prison in northeast Syria, the group said on Sunday.
The SDF said its units had carried out an operation against Islamic State (ISIS) militants planning to attack Hasakah prison, where ISIS fighters are jailed.
“Our Special Task Units have achieved remarkable work, saving our people and the world from a serious threat,” it said in a statement.
The SDF added that the militants were to participate in the attack were arrested, including Mohamed Abid al-Awad who is an ISIS emir.
Awad committed “many massacres” in the country, according to the SDF.
The prison, a series of three converted school buildings that holds roughly 5,000 prisoners, are operated by the SDF, consisted of Kurdish and Arab fighters.
In November, the SDF thwarted another “major operation” by the militants to break out 5,000 detainees at the prison.
One ISIS militant was killed and another was wounded in the fighting, the group said, adding that five other militants were detained.
