SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A health official was killed by Islamic State (ISIS) militants in Diyala province, Iraqi media reported on Saturday.

National Iraqi news agency cited a security source as saying that ISIS militants attacked the director of health center as he was driving his vehicle in Abu Karma area, northeast of Baquba.

The attack resulted in the killing of the health director, the agency reported.

Shafaq News named the health director as Manaf Zidan.

ISIS militants have increased attacks against civilians and security forces in the disputed territories claimed by both Erbil and Baghdad.

Last week, the militants kidnapped four civilians near Hamrin Lake in Diyala province. The security forces launched an operation to search and find the civilians.

Islamic State controlled roughly a third of Iraq between 2014 and 2017. Iraqi forces and Kurdish troops backed by U.S.-led Coalition forces as well as Iran-backed Shia militias defeated the militant group in 2017, but its members still roam areas of northern Iraq and northeastern Syria.
