SULAIMANI (ESTA) — British and Israeli foreign ministers said the two countries would “work night and day” in preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear power.

UK’s Truss and her Israeli counterpart Yair Lapid said Britain and Israel need close cooperation with their partners to thwart Iran’s ambitions to become a nuclear power.

“The clock is ticking, which heightens the need for close cooperation with our partners and friends to thwart Iran’s ambition,” they wrote in the Telegraph newspaper on Sunday, according to Reuters.

Earlier in the day, Israeli prime minister Naftali Bennett said Israel was “very worried” that world powers would remove sanctions on Iran in exchange for insufficient caps on its nuclear programme.

World powers and Iran will gather in Vienna on Monday to try to salvage their 2015 nuclear deal.

Six rounds of indirect talks were held between April and June. Negotiations were halted as Iran was heading to hold a presidential election.

Iran’s new negotiating team is insisting that all U.S. sanctions imposed since 2017 be lifted, according to Reuters.

In an interview with BBC Sounds on Saturday, U.S. special envoy to Iran Robert Malley said the United States and its partners were likely to exert pressure on Iran if it used talks as pretext to accelerate its nuclear programme.

“If Iran thinks it can use this time to build more leverage and then come back and say they want something better it simply won’t work. We and our partners won’t go for it,” Malley said.
