SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi security forces detained six people who were trying to cross into Iraq from Syria, authorities said on Sunday.

Iraq’s security media cell said the security forces detained six Iraqis in an “ambush” in Munif al-Faisal village in Rabia district, west of Nineveh.

The detainees holding Iraqi citizenship had “illegally left Iraq for Syria,” it added in a statement.

On November 10, six other Iraqis were detained after they crossed the border between Syria and Iraq.

Iraq has tightened security along 600 km border with Syria to curb the movement of Islamic State (ISIS) militants, drug smuggling and other illegal activities.

Iraqi forces have detained dozens of people including Syrians for attempting to cross the border between Syria and Iraq in the past months.

The security forces arrested 15 Syrians who were trying to cross into Iraq from Syria, according to authorities.
